Feds Urge Delay for '.xxx' Domain

Wired News: Feds Urge Delay for ‘.xxx’ Domain

Conservative groups such as the Family Research Council also expressed worries that creating a .xxx suffix would legitimize pornographers.

Here’s a newsflash for you – there’s nothing illegitimate about pornography per se. It’s a legal business. Certainly there are shady characters on the periphery who do things that are not legal, but that’s actually a big part of what the new TLD was meant to address with the requirement that domain owners subscribe to a set of best practices and pay a much higher registration fee to pay for enforcement. In fact, the concept isn’t all that different from Senator Blanche Lincoln’s porno tax except that it would be voluntary and instead of going into federal coffers it would go to fund a private enforcement mechanism and one that would be effective worldwide, not just in the US. Opposing a mechanism that has the potential to help parents control their kids access to smut and to contribute to solving some of the other problems related to porn sites because you’d prefer the problems to remain for political reasons is disingenuous. That’s a nice way of saying dishonest, which I was always led to believe was as sure a route to Hell as any other.
