Hastert pushing serious tax reform

Apparently Dennis Hastert at least is taking real tax reform, as opposed to tinkering at the edges of the bloated tax code, seriously. He’s reappointed the Rules Committee chairmen instead of appointing John Linder as expected – according to his spokesman because he wants Linder to focus on his effort to replace the income tax with the Fair Tax. The Ways and Means appointment puts him in a bully pulpit to do that.

On Ways and Means, he plans to continue to push his “Fair Tax” legislation that would scrap the federal income tax and replace it with a national sales tax. Hastert asked him to pursue the issue this year, and President Bush has made restructuring the tax code a second-term priority.
