This Time Article TIME.com: Bush Goes on the PR Offensive has an odd take on the meaning of democracy, one that I’ve noticed shared by most of the media and analysts, both left and right, the last couple of weeks.
On Saturday, Iraqis will vote on a proposed constitution. If it passes, as expected, Bush could highlight that development as an indication that Iraq is headed toward democracy.
Actually, given that it’s a constitution put together under a UN mandate by a government supported by US (and allied) military force, wouldn’t it be more an indication that Iraq was headed for democracy if the Iraqi people defeated the proposed constitution? Isn’t the whole point of democracy that the outcome of elections aren’t predetermined?
I’m just thinking and I know that’s dangerous….
