Resolved nonbindingly…

In the latest pointless non-binding exercise in passing a resolution expressing the, rather weak, will of the Congress, lawmakers are wasting time debating, the Bush administration is wasting time discouraging and the Turks are wasting time protesting a resolution condemning Ottoman genocide against the Armenians in 1915. 1915. In 1915, Indians were still on reservations and blacks were still segregated in the US. 1915 was 26 years before the US government started rounding up Japanese-Americans. The youngest baby to have potentially survived that genocide would now be over 90 years old. The youngest person involved in committing it is either dead or very close, at over 100 years old. There’s no statute of limitations on murder, so there shouldn’t be one on genocide, but once the murderer is dead, it’s time to drop it. Even attainders of treason are Constitutionally limited to the life of the traitor.

Rwanda, Germany, Poland, Armenia, Cambodia, Jamestown, North Carolina, Alabama, San Antonio, Johannesburg, Ramallah, Masadah… the history of “man’s inhumanity to man” is, in fact, the history of man. The history of massacres on this scale is the history of government. There’s plenty of blame to go around, if we all want to take responsibility for the acts of our own ancestors. And it’s all equally pointless. While there is a positive side to Congress wasting time instead of passing legislation, the debates are tiresome.

Let me suggest a solution. One final, resolution…

Whereas, every religion has been responsible for atrocities since long before the first baby was passed through the fire to Moloch, by omission if not directly; and

Whereas, every race or ethnic group has hated another ethnic group since long before Jacob grabbed Esau’s heel; and

Whereas, every nation has warred on some other nation, plunging both societies into Hell, since long before the face of Helen launched a thousand ships; and

Whereas, every people has produced evil individuals who advocate what we call genocide since long before Haman plotted the destruction of the Jews;

Therefore, Be it Resolved, we are all bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. Shame on us all.
