The KKK’s own favorite Senator Robert Byrd was on Meet the Press promoting his new book about how evil George Bush is, singing the praises of Richard Nixon in comparison to George Bush and waving around a pocket copy of the Constitution. KKK Byrd believes in the Constitution?
Then where was he during the extraconstitutional filibuster of the Miguel Estrada nomination? Why did this racist vote against confirming both Clarence Thomas AND Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court? Why did he filibuster and then vote against the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Doesn’t he believe in that part of the Constitution that says blacks are no longer 3/5 of a person?
Why did he write that he would “never submit to fight beneath the banner [the American flag] with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.” So, he’ll defend the flag and the Constitution, but not only for whites not for “race mongrels.”
Why if he believes in the supremacy of the United States Constitution does he oppose our defending ourselves against terrorists without the sanction of the United Nations?
Why did he vote for the biggest infringement of political free speech in the history of the Republic in 2001?
This man is a cancer on the United States Senate. That the US Senate in 2004 has a member who has the audacity to use a racist epithet so repugnant it is only referred to by its initial even in direct quotes and never show any publich contrition is a stain on the Republic. That he has the temerity to lecture the American people for supporting a President who defends our lives, liberty and property and, yes, our Constitution against terrorists is a threat to our Democracy. That West Virginians continue to reelect him is a disgrace to a fine a state.
