The New York Times > International > Asia Pacific > Offer of Gold for Killings Is Probably by bin Laden, C.I.A. Says
“An American official familiar with the recording noted that the offer of a reward from Mr. bin Laden was a departure from a pattern in which Al Qaeda’s leader has usually appealed to his followers on grounds of their religious obligation. The fact that Mr. bin Laden was offering gold – in an amount currently worth about $180,000 – suggests that he does not want to appear beholden to the currency of the United States, Europe or any other country, that American official said.”

The fact that he’s offering large sums of gold suggests to me that he’s running out of men willing to kill themselves for the prospect of 72 virgins in Paradise. I think that bin Laden’s group is nearing it’s last breath as a major organized force. I don’t doubt that we’ll be cleaning up remnants and copycats for years, but this looks like a desperation move to me.
