In April of 1983 a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven into the US Embassy compound in Beirut. When it explodes, it kills 63 people. The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once
more. Then just six short months later a large truck heavily laden down with over 2500 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine Corps headquarters in Beirut and 241 US servicemen are killed. America mourns her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more. Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait, and America continues her slumber. The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gates of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.
This is a great article that maintains WWIII started with the seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979. I tend to agree, but this fellow’s inclusion of attacks on military targets as “terrorism” gets me thinking. For quite some time I’ve wondered why these attacks are included and it’s become clear that the reason is that at a gut level we realize that these attacks on legitimate military targets are part of the same war. On the other hand, the fact that the “terrorists” sometimes attack legitimate targets should make clear that this war isn’t really about terrorism. Terrorism is just one tool the enemy is using. At times they are perfectly willing to attack military targets. The war did start in 1979, but it’ not America vs. “terrorists”, it’s the free civilizations of the world vs. Islamo-fascists.
