A little more democracy is breaking out in the Middle East with the first elections in the United Arab Emirates. Not a huge step, but like I wrote on another subject a few days ago, half a loaf is better than no loaf. The UAE is not exactly a hotbed of dissent, so to some extent elections may be more symbolic than earthshaking in terms of government policies. But every step in this direction makes the Middle East a little better place and the world with it.
In a step toward its first political reforms, the United Arab Emirates announced Thursday it will hold the first elections for its consultative council since the nation was founded in 1971.
