U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stepped down as defense secretary on Wednesday, one day after midterm elections in which opposition to the war in Iraq contributed to heavy Republican losses.
Pardon me while I mix metaphors.
Rats are supposed to desert the ship while it’s sinking, not after it’s sunk.
You’re supposed to lock the barn door before the horses get out.
If you’re gonna jump on a grenade it’s best to do it before it explodes.
There’s no point taking one for the team once the game is lost.
If you’re going to crucify the GOP on a cross of Rumsfeld, at least have the good grace to keep the cross around through the end of your term as promised. The reminder of the cost of serious political miscalculation might be useful.
Whether this was a firing or a resignation, the timing appears to mix cowardice and stupidity.
