The IRA has formally ordered an end to its armed campaign and says it will pursue exclusively peaceful means.
As I noted before fighting, and especially killing innocent civilians, over which European nation with European guarantees of civil liberties to be part of is just insane. And for the socialist Provos to fight to leave the UK for the relatively freer economy of Ireland seems especially ironic. Clearly whatever residual problems really remain in terms of the split between Catholics & Protestants in Northern Ireland have to seem pretty minor in relation to some of the larger issues in the world. A political solution was the sensible course in the 1970s when the madmen started their terror campaign. Today, in a world increasingly unified against terrorism and with both Ireland and the UK prepared to treat them as nothing more than racketeers, this wasn’t just a smart move for the IRA, it was the only move that wasn’t suicidal.
