An Interactive Look at US & Texas Government
What Are We Talking About?
This section provides the basic definitions for “interest group” and “lobbying.” These are the foundational concepts for understanding how organized interests interact with government in both Washington D.C. and Austin.
Interest Group
An organization of individuals who share a common political goal and unite for the purpose of influencing government decisions. They are a natural result of the “factions” that James Madison wrote about in Federalist No. 10.
Lobbying
The act of attempting to influence the actions, policies, or decisions of public officials. This can be done through direct contact (meeting with legislators) or indirect methods (running ad campaigns).
